Lyme disease is one of Australia’s hidden epidemics. Most people do not even know that they have Lyme disease until the symptoms have become extremely obvious.  Essentially, Lyme disease is an infection caused by a bacteria known as Borrelia. The bacteria, a spirochete, is transmitted when an individual is bitten by a tick. Serious cases of Lyme disease may impact not only the body’s physical systems but organs as well and in some cases may mimic other illnesses and transmit other diseases.

Lyme disease is often categorised in two stages the two stages are described as the ‘early stage’ and the ‘late stage’. The early stage is often classed as flu like symptoms such as headaches, unknown fatigue, fever, sore muscles or joint pain and the late stage is often recognised as chronic signs that may affect the bodies systems such as the digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, circulatory and neurological systems.

NutriPATH offer four unique testing panels in identifying whether there is a presence of Lyme disease using sensitive detection methods such as the B.Burgdorferi tested by ELISA. This test is used most often to detect antibodies to B. burgdorferi specific to Lyme disease. The B.Burgdorferi tested by Western Blot is a far more sensitive method. If the ELISA test is positive, another test the Western blot is usually recommended to confirm the diagnosis.
