Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a cytokine that is synthesised by many cell types in the body. It plays a modulatory role in immune responses and can indicate that the immune system is being activated. Interleukin 6 may be raised in inflammation, infection, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular disease and some cancers.
Ferritin is the main protein in the body in which iron is stored. It provides an indirect measurement of the body’s iron status. High ferritin may be associated with haemochromatosis. Haemachromatosis is a disorder where iron accumulates in the body due to the amount being absorbed from the intestines exceeding the amount excreted. High Ferritin status may feature in other chronic disease processes.
HsCRP High sensitivity C-reactive protein is a marker of inflammation in the body. It can also be used to predict cardiovascular outcomes/for cardiovascular risk assessment.
